Rock Lee 'Naruto'

Rock Lee (ロック・リー, Rokku Rī) is one of the main supporting characters of the series. He is a chūnin-level shinobi of Konohagakure and a member of Team Guy. During his time as a student in the Ninja Academy, Lee proved to have no talent for ninjutsu and genjutsu. He was mocked by his peers because of this. Lee persevered, focusing on taijutsu.

When Lee eventually graduated he was added to Team Guy. During the team's first meeting he vowed to become a splendid ninja that specialized in taijutsu. Neji Hyūga laughed at him, but their sensei, Might Guy, took a special interest in Lee. He encouraged Lee to keep at it and, in time, began teaching him powerful forms of taijutsu.

Lee is extremely energetic, single-minded, and over-enthusiastic. He is characterized as being the epitome of a "nice guy", having assumed many of Guy's personality quirks. One such trait is his apparent lack of common sense, believing at times that he can get what he wants by not wanting it. At other times, he takes copious notes, but forgets that he cannot check them during a fight. He also has a keen sense of honour, and respects his opponents, refusing to hold grudges against those who have defeated him, and returning favours to those that have helped him. This was shown by his readily befriending Gaara and forgiving him for crushing his arm and leg, which led to his hospitalization and nearly ended his career as a ninja. Lee feels others should show the same respect towards their opponents, and is disgusted whenever someone is unnecessarily cruel to their enemies.

Lee is known for speaking respectfully to others, being very proper in both English and Japanese language versions, and never using contractions or swearwords. He also uses formal Japanese, applying proper titles ("-san", "-kun", etc.) to anyone he meets. However, Lee refers his team-mates Neji Hyūga and Tenten just by their given names, implying that he is close enough to them to use such an informal way to speak to them. His relationship with Guy has also caused him to acquire many of Guy's traits; in addition to his personality, his dedication to his promises, as well as his belief that one cannot dislike food, are characteristics of Guy.

Lee's attempts to prove and better himself are recurring themes for his actions throughout the series. He is generally optimistic, and believes that, with hard work and passion, he can surpass a natural genius, but can be prone to depression when faced with setbacks. His drive to succeed was initially most evident with his rivalry with Neji, having learned from Guy that having a rival will provide incentive to succeed. Neji, a "genius" ninja, found Lee's efforts of bettering himself to be in vain, believing Lee would be stuck as a "failure" for the rest of his life.

As such, Lee resolved to prove Neji wrong, and confronted another "genius", Sasuke Uchiha, in an attempt to test his worth. While Lee maintained the desire to defeat Neji in a fight throughout the Chūnin Exam Arc, after Neji's eventual defeat by Naruto Uzumaki, another so-called "failure", Lee became less interested in this goal. Neji's rejection of his previous belief in fate might also have contributed to this, as he now respects Lee, believing that he will surpass the gifted with enough work.

Shortly after his introduction to Team 7, Lee revealed that he liked Sakura Haruno, asking her to be his girlfriend and vowing to protect her immediately after they met. While she did not seem to share these feelings for him, and considered him weird, Lee maintained these feelings, and went out of his way to help her throughout the Chūnin Exams. Sakura becomes more appreciative after this, and punches Naruto whenever he insults Lee.

Despite this, Sakura does not seem to return any romantic feelings for Lee, as she refers to him with the more formal "Lee-san", as opposed to "Lee-kun". After the Exams' conclusion, Lee's interest in Sakura goes largely unaddressed in the manga. It is occasionally referenced in the anime, such as when Naruto fought Lee in the Lee's Dojo arc; Naruto transformed into Sakura, causing Lee to forget about the fight long enough for Naruto to attack him.

Lee possesses very thick eyebrows (leading to the nickname "Centipede Brows" (ゲジマユ, Gejimayu; English TV "Bushy Brows") by Naruto) and large, perfectly rounded black eyes. During his academy days, Lee's hair was much longer and fastened in a braid, along with his style of dress, gave him a more traditional Chinese appearance. When first joining Team Guy Lee's appearance changed a lot as well. He had shorter hair than before that curved upwards in the back. He still maintained the Chinese appearance, since he wore a robe and a martial arts belt around his waist. After joining Might Guy's team, his appearance changed considerably to emulate his idol and sensei.

His hair was cut and styled into a bowl-cut style like Guy, and he also began wearing the same attire, consisting of a green jumpsuit, orange leg warmers, and wears his red forehead protector as a belt. The only attire difference Lee had to his sensei were the bandages he regularly wore around his hands and wrists, which also cover a set of stitches on his left hand,[4] a trait that was due to his rigorous taijutsu training. In Guy's youth however, it was revealed that he also wore bandages.[5]

During Part II, his appearance has changed the least out of his friends. The most noticeable changes are that he has grown considerably taller, and wears a flak jacket, as a chūnin, further emulating his sensei, however instead of wearing it open, Lee's is zipped up.

Guy's leadership has influenced Lee's training habits, which, coupled with his hard-working resolve, has allowed Lee to rapidly improve. When making a promise, for example, Lee assigns himself arduous tasks to complete in the event that he doesn't live up to his expectations. When this promise is broken, usually just barely, he ends up training to prevent it from happening again.

Since Guy began training him, Lee has worn extremely heavy weights on his ankles that appear deceptively light, increasing his strength at the cost of inhibiting his speed to levels that his peers still consider quite fast. Upon removing the weights, Lee's speed vastly increases, making it almost impossible to see his movements with the unaided eye. As such, the removal of his weights is a huge trump card for Lee. When he removed his ankle weights during his fight with Gaara, they enabled him to be the first person to ever bypass his defences and strike him.

Lee has trained so extensively he can run and even fight while unconscious, using nothing but pure muscle memory. A flashback during the 'Curry of Life' filler arc, in Part I, highlighted that Lee can run in his sleep, due to training from Guy. Lee, as a properly-trained ninja, is more highly aware of his surrounding through his senses than a regular person would be: Highlighted in the 'Three-Tails' arc, when he was blinded by Kigiri's Vanishing Smoke Prison Technique, Lee called on his training from Might Guy to be able to home in on Kihō through his "spirit sensor" — which he had developed through "unceasing diligence and determination".

Lee's speed was so great in Part II he could intercept a charge from Haku, who is known for his speed both in and out of his Demonic Ice Crystal Mirrors.

Taijutsu

Lee easily defeats Naruto.

Lee has no talent for ninjutsu or genjutsu, leaving him unable to use them. Because this would ordinarily make life as a ninja impossible, Lee's dream is to become a famous ninja who uses only taijutsu, despite having had very little talent for this, as well. Guy has specially trained him to reach this goal, teaching him a number of forbidden techniques in the process. The most basic of these is his Strong Fist style of combat, a martial art style focusing on external damage. In doing so, Lee has become a taijutsu master, as he has only trained in that form and has therefore almost perfected it. Lee is shown to be very fast even with the weights on his legs, but his true speed was first shown in his match against Gaara. His speed and prowess surpass those of more experienced ninja, and it is only in unique circumstances that his taijutsu is not enough to defeat an opponent. During Lee's fight with Kimimaro in Part I, Lee accidentally drank sake instead of his medicine, and slipped into Drunken Fist. After Lee slipped into Drunken Fist, Kimimaro noted that Lee's attack form was "too angular". In the anime, it also seems that Lee is proficient with melee weapons. He tried to attack Kisame with a pair of Tonfa, but he was stopped before he could show his abilities. However, in Naruto the Movie 3: Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom, Lee was shown to be very skilled with wielding nunchaku and a staff.

Eight Inner Gates

Lee after opening the third chakra gate.

Through Guy's teachings, Lee has learned how to open the first five of eight chakra gates, a feat that is difficult for even the most talented ninja. Because of the danger to his body that the gates' power presents, Lee is only permitted to open them in certain circumstances (such as life-or-death situations, protecting someone dear, or defending his way of the ninja). Most humans can only access less than 20% of their muscle potential but the eight gates uses chakra to "force" the muscles to work at much more power than they normally do, allowing the user to run at phenomenal speeds, pick up enormous weights, and much more at the expense of the muscles themselves. Near 50%, the muscles start to wear down and tear. Much more than that, approaching 100%, the muscles begin to break down and disintegrate. Once the Eighth Gate has been opened, they are practically unstoppable, but they die in the process. Lee has also learned or developed a number of taijutsu that take advantage of the extreme power and speed he gains from opening chakra gates. In Part II, he seems to be able to recover from using the chakra gates quickly as he was not injured after using it, but was very exhausted.

Drunken Fist

Lee using the Drunken Fist.

Lee has manifested a natural predisposition towards the Drunken Fist. When he drinks as little as one drop of alcohol, he becomes an unpredictable and unstoppable force of destruction and chaos. His actions while drunk are usually misguided attempts to impress Guy, regardless of whether or not Guy is around. He drunkenly attacks any friend or foe that is near him.

Guy explained that, after Lee accidentally drank a small amount of sake, he proceeded to demolish the bar they were in, and it took the combined efforts of Guy and Neji to hold him down without harming him. To help him take advantage of the Drunken Fist, Guy has given Lee an alcoholic chocolate in Naruto: Shippūden the Movie to be used only in a "dire pinch" — Lee however is under the mistaken impression that they are simply an aid for opening his sixth chakra gate, commenting that they taste like his medicine.

Part I

Chūnin Exam Arc

Lee shocks Sasuke with his sheer speed.

Having not been allowed to participate the year before, Team Guy took part in the Chūnin Exams along with the Rookie Nine. They initially tried to avoid attention by acting weak, but Lee accidentally let slip his true strength by interfering with a fight between Sasuke and Kotetsu. Soon afterwards, he confronted Sasuke, challenging him to a fight to see how he fared against the Sharingan. Guy interrupted their fight, however, when Lee tried to use the Front Lotus, and Lee was forced to do laps around the practice range before he could proceed onto the first phase of the exams. With Tenten's help, he gained the answers for the written portion, and proceeded to the second round.

Lee comes to Sakura's aid.

After spending their first few days in the Forest of Death gathering supplies, Team Guy split up in search of other teams. Lee came across Sakura being attacked by Team Dosu, and went to her aid. He used his Front Lotus on Dosu, but he survived the attack because of Zaku using his Decapitating Air Wave in the ground, and Lee was left unable to defend himself from a counterattack from Dosu. Neji and Tenten soon arrived to help, but didn't have to because Sasuke woke up, and once he recovered they moved onto the preliminaries.

Lee using Front Lotus on Gaara.

In the preliminaries, Lee was matched against Gaara. When his standard attacks proved unable to bypass Gaara's defences, he removed his ankle weights to increase his speed. When this too failed, he attempted the Forward Lotus, but Gaara was able to escape at the last minute. His options running out if he was to win and prove himself, Guy allowed him to use the Reverse Lotus. Gaara survived by turning his gourd to sand and cushion him, and the techniques took a massive toll on Lee's body. Gaara added to Lee's injury by crushing his left arm and leg. Though Guy intervened to stop Gaara from killing him, Lee got to his feet to continue the battle, despite being completely unconscious.

Because of his injuries, medics predicted, that even if Lee recovered, his injuries would prevent him from ever being able to be a shinobi again. He nevertheless tried to train while he was in the hospital, something that only worsened his condition. To try and cheer Lee up, Guy took him to watch the final round matches, but they were surprised when they arrived to find out that Neji had been defeated by Naruto. Envious of Naruto, Lee then watched Gaara's fight with Sasuke, and marvelled at how quickly he had learned to emulate Lee's speed. Before the fight could finish, however, the invasion of Konoha began, and Lee was knocked unconscious.

Sasuke Retrieval Arc

Lee attacks Kimimaro.

Over the coming weeks, Guy tried a number of his own remedies to heal Lee, though none of his efforts worked. It was not until news of Tsunade becoming Hokage reached them that they found hope. But, when she examined Lee, she informed him of the dire situation: his broken bones and torn muscles have healed, but fragments of bone had lodged in his spinal column, and removing them would involve an extensive operation that only she was capable of. When Tsunade offered him an operation that carried a fifty percent chance of returning him to his former state, or dying in the process, Lee was hesitant to accept the operation. Though Lee was worried he would die in the operation, thanks to Guy's influence, he accepted the surgery. In the end, Lee successfully survived the operation. Upon overhearing Naruto, Chōji Akimichi, Kiba Inuzuka, and Shikamaru Nara talking about the mission to bring Sasuke back to Konoha, Lee suggested that Neji go with them. Lee was disappointed that he couldn't go with them, still recovering from his surgery (in the anime, he had yet to undergo the surgery).

The final moments of the fight with Kimimaro.

Once Lee was well enough to move, he left the hospital to follow them and provide assistance. He caught up with Naruto, who was in the middle of a battle with Kimimaro, and told him to go after Sasuke while he dealt with Kimimaro. At first, it seemed Kimimaro overmatched him, but after Lee drank some sake that he had mistaken for his medicine, he began to outclass Kimimaro. Though Lee's anticipated moves were unpredictable to Kimimaro, he revealed his Kekkei Genkai, Shikotsumyaku, which, combined with Lee sobering up, easily took over the battle. Before his attack landed on Lee, Gaara arrived just in time to save him. Even though Lee insisted to fight side-by-side with him, he knew he was only getting in Gaara's way.

For the rest of the battle, Lee watches and is amazed by Gaara's new abilities. Even though Gaara's new techniques completely buried Kimimaro, Kimimaro counters by turning the battlefield into a forest of bones, which Lee and Gaara escaped by hanging onto a pair of small clouds made out of sand. Kimimaro then emerged from one of the bones, preparing to kill the two at point blank range. They were saved, however, as Kimimaro finally succumbed to his disease and died. After the battle, Lee and Gaara reflect upon Kimimaro's purpose, then the two return to Konoha.

Curry of Life Arc

Ranmaru is discovered.

Lee revealed that he once ran a marathon with Guy near the village of Katabami Kinzan shortly after being assigned to his team, and when he collapsed from exhaustion near the Curry of Life shop, the owner, Sanshō, and her son Karashi fed him curry and saved his life. Lee's dedication caused Karashi to become enthusiastic, and he later left. A year later, when he came to the village with his team-mates and Naruto to defeat the Kurosuki family, he found that Karashi had joined, and was upset that Karashi had sought strength in this way. He allowed Karashi to seek redemption, but Karashi used this opportunity to lure Lee's group into a trap after their first battle with Raiga. The trap failed due to Naruto's use of shadow clones, and while the villagers were willing to seek vengeance on Karashi, Lee stepped in, promising to take responsibility for Karashi's actions. Karashi used the opportunity to take Ranmaru to revive Raiga. Lee went to fight Raiga with Naruto and Neji, and was knocked out but brought back to consciousness with the Curry of Life. The curry, however, accidentally contained wine, and Lee was intoxicated. He fought Raiga, but was defeated, and Naruto finished Raiga off.

Ninja Academy Arc

The Academy Students were divided into teams of three and were assigned to a genin who would lead them on a mission against the other teams. Lee was assigned to lead a team of three academy students; Chen, Samo and En. His time with them was not covered much except that he was doing better than Naruto: After fending off some 'bandits', one of Lee's charges addressed Lee as "Lee-Sensei" out of awe, and, overjoyed, Lee went off into one of his declarations into the sunset whilst his students tried to tell him that he was going the wrong way.

Guy and Lee Impersonator Arc

Guy and Lee left the village on a mission, and two spies tried to imitate them. Tsunade immediately saw through their disguise, and gave them various difficult, disgusting, or humiliating missions in order to keep them busy and prevent them from learning anything. They encountered the real Lee and Guy on the way out of the village and tried to attack, but were sent flying back to Konohagakure.

Hoshigakure Arc

Lee accompanied Neji, Naruto, and Tenten on the mission to Hoshigakure, playing a lesser role than in previous arcs. He attempted to follow two of Akahoshi's men while hiding under a barrel, as Tenten suggested, but was discovered almost instantly. While trying to infiltrate Akahoshi's mansion, he pretended to use a jutsu known as "Wall-Removing Technique", but, in actuality, it involved him moving at high speed to open a door from the other side. He was wounded during the final battle with Akahoshi, leaving Naruto to fight him alone.

Lee's Dōjō Arc

Rock Lee's Gutz Dōjō.

Lee, seeing that he had little time to train with other people due to the many missions that must be done, sought a new means of training. He saw a man challenging a dōjō, ready to take the sign if he won, and ready to join if he lost, and believed that a dōjō would bring many strong opponents. When Naruto stumbled upon the dōjō, Lee asked that he fight, but Naruto hastily left, late for reporting back to Tsunade.

Guy, after hearing about the dōjō from Naruto, decides to disguise himself in order to fight Lee. However, he was given a mission at the last second, and an impostor replaced him. Lee fought the impostor and easily defeated him, but Naruto believed that the impostor was Guy, and that he was not fighting at full strength in order to avoid revealing himself. Naruto fought Lee while the impostor transformed into Lee, but met the real Guy while trying to leave, and was easily defeated by him.

Third Great Beast Arc

Lee's condition worsened, and Tsunade became concerned about him injuring himself again. She removed him from missions, but allowed him to keep training after he convinced her to do so. Around this time, Guy arrived with a new student, who easily defeated Lee and injured his ankle. While Lee was recovering, Guy took the new student with him on a mission, causing Lee to believe that he had abandoned him. It was then revealed that the new student was an impostor, and that he planned on seeking vengeance against Guy. Lee headed to Guy's location, but was trapped in a castle made out of sparring posts. He and Lee were tricked into fighting each other by seeing the other as a sparring dummy, but they saw through the technique and opened their chakra gates to destroy the dummies without harming the actual person, freeing themselves and destroying the castle.

Trap Master Arc

Lee, despite having few special abilities, made some noteworthy contributions to the investigation. While he initially encouraged the academy students to keep practicing throwing kunai, once he realized that hitting the bull's eye would cause a chain reaction that would detonate explosives around Konoha, he caught a kunai in midair just before it hit the target, despite being far away from it. He defeated Gennō with his taijutsu during the final confrontation.

Shinobazu Arc

Naruto accompanied Sakura and Lee to escort Gantetsu. When the ship was sliced in half by a metal wire, Lee ended up with Sakura, and found the orphans Gantetsu had cared for. During the raid on the hideout, he fought the Shinobazu members outside.

Ultimate Weapon Arc

Lee and Naruto helped Gaara fight and defeat an opponent who could absorb his enemies' chakra with his armour. After the mission, he sparred with Tenten, who was upset over being the only member of the Konoha 11 left out of the mission despite having a mission at the time, and noted that, in order to be able to face Naruto when he returned, they too must become stronger.

Part II

Kazekage Rescue Arc Edit Kazekage Rescue Arc section

Rock Lee in Part II.

Team Kakashi was sent on a mission to rescue Gaara from Akatsuki. When Tsunade began to worry that they might have problems, she sent Team Guy as back-up. On their way to a rendezvous point, they were attacked by Kisame Hoshigaki. Kisame was quite angered that Guy didn't remember him from their fight in Part I. Kisame soon captured Lee, Neji, and Tenten, but by opening the sixth gate, Guy ended the fight quickly, and they moved on.

Rock Lee and Guy attack Kisame.

Once Kakashi's team arrived after them, the two squads found out that there was a barrier on the Akatsuki headquarters, something Team Guy volunteered to take down. They split up and removed seals spread out across the area, bringing down the barrier but triggering a trap: they were attacked by clones of themselves. When they were about to be defeated, Lee figured out how to beat the clones - by being stronger than when they met them. With that, Lee uses a new technique to defeat his clone. Later on, they reunited with Team 7 and, once Gaara was revived, they headed back home. As they left, Guy was carrying Kakashi for a piggyback-ride. Lee, thinking it was training, told Neji to get on his back so that they might race back to Konoha, but was forcefully rejected.

Twelve Guardian Ninja Arc

Unlike past fillers, Lee's appearance is in this one was very small. He first appeared shortly after Sora arrived in the village and began fighting with some of Lee's fellow graduates. Thinking it was a spirited sparring match, he joined in. Later, during Kazuma's invasion of Konoha, Lee helped defend the village from the zombies.

Three-Tails Arc

Team Two formed to capture the Three Tails.

Guy taught Tenten and Lee how to synchronize attacks, something that consisted of tying them together, which had little success. Soon afterwards, they were assigned to assist Team Yamato and Team Kurenai with sealing the Three-Tailed Beast. Lee was tasked with preventing any interference with the sealing, so confronted Guren's men when they arrived. Although they tried to use a smokescreen to blind him, Lee was able to use his heightened senses to seek them out and defeat them. He then faced Guren herself, but was unable to stop her from interrupting the sealing. Later, after learning that Naruto was trapped inside the Three-Tails, Lee was assigned as a guard against interference from saving Naruto and sealing the Three-Tails. Lee expressed his confidence that Naruto was alright, and his desire to have an all-out battle with Naruto one day. Later, Lee was surprised to find that Guren's men had returned for a second fight. Despite his passionate desire to fight, he and his team were defeated and nearly killed by the enemies' new-found might. He and Tenten survived thanks to her iron shell. Later, they return to Konoha with the others.

Konoha History Arc

Lee is seen recuperating at a physical training room after his fight with Gaara at the Chūnin Exams. To make sure Lee recovers quicker, Guy makes him a special medicine created form the Jofuku flower. When Naruto accidentally drinks the medicine, he must go to the Jofuku Forest to retrieve more flowers.

Invasion of Pain Arc

When Pain's invasion of Konoha began, Team Guy was away on a mission. During a stop on their return home, they noticed a number of birds apparently escaping from the village. They rushed to the village, and found it to be in ruins. They found Hinata Hyūga badly injured, and got her medical attention. Later, he is seen with the rest of the village celebrating Naruto's victory.

Five Kage Summit Arc

Lee accompanies Sakura to track down Sasuke.

When news reaches Konoha of Sasuke Uchiha's crimes against other villages, Lee and the rest of the Konoha 11 decide they should eliminate Sasuke themselves before he can involve Konoha in a war. So that Sakura can inform Naruto of their decision, Lee, Kiba, and Sai escort her to the Land of Iron. When they locate him, Sakura tells Naruto that she loves him, surprising Lee. This does not convince him to give up his own search for Sasuke, so they leave without another word. Sakura then asks her escorts to help her find Sasuke. When they near his location, Sakura tries to knock them out so she can face Sasuke alone. Sai stops her, so Sakura convinces Lee and Kiba that he is a traitor. While they try to detain him, she succeeds in knocking them out. After Sakura and the rest of Team 7 meet with Sasuke, they revive Lee and the others and return to Konoha. Lee is later seen with the rest of the Konoha 11, hearing Naruto's decision to take responsibility for Sasuke.

Shinobi World War Arc Edit Shinobi World War Arc sectionEdit

Lee and Guy attack Haku.

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Lee is assigned to the Third Division alongside Sakura and Guy. He is seen fretting over his sensei's condition while Sakura tries to heal him. When members of the Surprise Attack Division are attacked by the revived shinobi, the Third Division arrives in time to intercept the attack. He is then seen along with the Third Division clashing against the resurrected ninja. Upon Kakashi's orders, they group into a Manji Formation, Lee promises that no matter what he will protect Sakura; she however tells him to also be careful as last time Zabuza was able to penetrate the formation from its weak point; the centre. He and Guy later intercepted Haku's assault with the Leaf Coiling Whirlwind. Lee is then seen along with the rest of Third Division recuperating after the first day of war.

Characters Fairy Tail

The Fairy Tail anime and manga series features a diverse cast of characters created by Hiro Mashima. Set in a magical world, a young celestial spirit wizard, Lucy Heartfilia, travels through the land of Fiore to join the magical Fairy Tail Guild. Along the way, she meets Natsu Dragneel, a teenage boy looking for a dragon named Igneel. Shortly after their meeting, Lucy is abducted by a man called Bora of Prominence, who was posing as Salamander of Fairy Tail, to be sold as a slave. Natsu rescues her and reveals that he is the real Salamander and has the skills of a Dragon Slayer. He offers her membership into the guild, which she accepts, and they become a team performing various missions for Fairy Tail.

Protagonists

Natsu Dragneel

Natsu Dragneel (ナツ・ドラグニル Natsu Doraguniru?) is the main male character of the series. Natsu has a carefree and reckless nature and constantly bickers with other members of the guild. Sometimes comes off as an idiot. He has a competitive relationship with frequent teammates Gray Fullbuster and Erza Scarlet; Gray tends to insult Natsu, prompting frequent skirmishes, while Erza, an S-class wizard, represents a way for Natsu to prove how strong he is. Despite his reckless and headstrong nature, Natsu is a skilled tactician and can pick up on an opponent's abilities and weaknesses very quickly. He is also vehemently loyal to Fairy Tail, and does not allow anyone to sully its name. Natsu suffers from motion sickness from all modes of transportation, including trains, carriages, and people carrying him on their back; the only exception is being carried by Happy. He is voiced by Tetsuya Kakihara in Japanese and Todd Haberkorn in English.

Natsu's nickname is "Salamander", and he is often recognized by his pink hair, scale-skin scarf, and fire magic. He was raised by the dragon, Igneel, who taught him how to talk, write, and use an ancient style of magic known as "Dragon Slayer". Because of his magic, Natsu can eat any flame other than his own for nourishment. He can also emit fire from any part of his body. The size and power of the flame is a direct result of Natsu's mood, so when properly motivated in a battle he is recognized as one of the strongest wizards in Fairy Tail. During the series, Natsu consumes some Lacrima containing Etherion, the magic beam that was fired by the Magic Council and captured in solid form in the crystal, which greatly improves his abilities; his skin becomes scaly, and his speed and the strength of his fire are also greatly increased. This is known as the Dragon Force, the highest level of Dragon Slayer magic, allowing one to gain the power of a dragon. In Mashima's one-shot short story that served as the basis for the manga, Natsu was originally a spirit, and had horns on his head.

Happy

Happy (ハッピー Happī?) is a blue, talking cat with the ability to use magic. Series creator Hiro Mashima was originally going to name him "Freyr" after the Norse god, but didn't think it fit his character. In keeping with his name he is generally quite happy, and is more cool-headed than his partner, Natsu. One type of special ability magic called "Aera" allows Happy to temporarily grow wings on his back and fly, but he can only carry one person in this form. This is the only kind of transportation that does not give Natsu motion sickness. When asked why, Natsu exclaims that Happy is a friend, not a means of transportation.. Happy emerged from an egg found by Natsu in the forest, and with the help of Lisanna, Mirajane and Elfman they took care of the egg, hoping a dragon would emerge. The egg was taken by Elfman, who had taken the egg when Lisanna and Natsu were sleeping, wanting to help with the egg's hatching, but was too embarrassed, and decided to help out secretly. After Magnolia is absorbed by Anima, he discovers that he is an Exceed, a race of cat-like creatures that can absorb magic within their bodies. When Happy and Carla escape from Extalia, a farmer takes them in. Unbeknowst to Happy, the farmer and his wife are his parents. Their names are Lucky and Marla. He is voiced by Rie Kugimiya in Japanese and Tia Ballard in English.

Lucy Heartfilia

Lucy Heartfilia (ルーシィ・ハートフィリア Rūshi Hatofiria?) is the main female character of the series. She joins Fairy Tail at the start of the series, having always wanted to be a member. She is always teamed with Natsu when on a job, though the frequent battles they get involved in have left her wishing she could do an easy job by herself. Lucy is one of the saner and more stable members of Fairy Tail, often being the only one to recognize the absurdity of her teammate's actions. She is also very confident in her appearance and sex appeal, exuding a certain amount of vanity. Lucy comes from a wealthy family, her father owning a large valley that serves as his estate's garden. Because she is estranged from her father, she left him and his fortune after the death of her mother so that she could follow her own path. In the series, it is revealed that father once told Lucy that he and her mother came from the guild Love & Lucky, and the "K" in "Lucky" fell off so the sign read "Love & Luc y"; the memory resonated strongly with them, thus they decided to name their daughter Lucy. She is voiced by Aya Hirano in Japanese and Cherami Leigh in English. Her given name was inspired from The Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".

Lucy practices Celestial Spirit magic, a skill that allows her to summon spirits from another world using Gatekeys. Before she is allowed to use the key she must sign a contract with the spirit to decide upon when she is allowed to summon them. There are two types of keys: silver keys, which are common and of a large variety, and twelve extremely rare gold keys that open the "Twelve Gates of the Zodiac." Her Celestial Spirits have varying levels of power, with different ones suited for different tasks. For example, Aquarius can control water, while Taurus has enormous strength. She can summon multiple spirits (an uncommon ability) at once for short periods of time, but tires out easily when doing so. Lucy's main weakness is she cannot perform magic without her keys, although Loke is able to appear with or without being called out. Along with her keys, she also carries a whip which she is proficient with.

Gold Keys
  • Aquarius: "The Water Bearer" is a long-haired mermaid that can only be summoned into a body of water. She is selfish and taunts Lucy, often attacking both Lucy and Lucy's enemies with a torrent of water. Her occasional "off-days" would most likely be spent on a date with her boyfriend, Scorpio.
  • Taurus: "The Golden Bull" is a minotaur with a white and black splotched coat and a nose ring. He wields a giant two-bladed axe. He is a pervert and constantly compliments Lucy's body.
  • Cancer: "The Great Crab" is a hair stylist with crab-claw shaped hair. He has six large crab-legs that come out of his back and carries around scissors. When he is first summoned, Happy assumes that Cancer would end all of his sentences with kani (crab), but in reality, Cancer ends all of his sentences with ebi (shrimp).
  • Virgo: "The Maiden" is a maid with shackles and chains around her wrists. Her ability is to tunnel underground. Her appearance reflects her current master's preference: when introduced under the ownership of Duke Everlue she looks giant and overweight, but she slims down after Lucy takes possession of her key.
  • Sagittarius: "The Archer" is a man wearing a horse costume that uses a bow and arrow. It is given to Lucy as a reward for saving Galuna Island. He ends his sentences with "moshi-moshi" (hello-hello).
  • Leo: "The Lion" is Loke, who gives his key to Lucy after she helps him return to the spirit world. He was previously owned by Karen Lilica, whose abusive attitude towards Aries resulted in an argument where Leo refused to return to the spirit world until she released him and Aries from their contracts. By doing this, Leo prevented Karen from summoning other Celestial Spirits which caused her death on a mission. After he regains his former powers as a Celestial Spirit, Loke demonstrates that he is much stronger than he used to be when he was a member of Fairy Tail. Leo is able to appear into the real world at will without being called; he can sense when Lucy is in danger, and come assist her when needed.
  • Scorpio: "The Scorpion" is a man with a cannon in the shape of a mechanical stinger, and hair split into two different colors. He is Aquarius' boyfriend.
  • Gemini: "The Twins" are two small imp-like creatures who can copy others in terms of appearances, abilities, and even thoughts. They were previously owned by Angel.
  • Aries: "The Ram" is a young girl dressed in a woolen dress and long boots. Aries's past masters treated her badly and hardly ever took her feelings into consideration; when Karen was killed by Angel, Aries fell into Angel's possession until Angel is defeated by Lucy.[9]
  • Capricorn: "The Goat" is a tall man with a goat's body. He was originally Lucy's mother's spirit but she fell ill and passed her keys on to three other mages. Among these was Zoldeo, who held Capricorn's key. However, Zoldeo became swallowed by darkness and committed a taboo by using Human Subordination magic on Capricorn, which fused their bodies together.
Silver Keys
  • Crux: "The Southern Cross" is a large humanoid stone-made cross with a cross-shaped nose and mustache. He specializes in searching for information on different spirits and their masters.
  • Horologium: "The Time Piece" is a living grandfather clock that is large enough for people to hide in. Lucy usually does this for shelter or as a mode of transportation. Once inside, Horologium speaks for her, ending every sentence with "my Mistress says".
  • Lyra: "The Lyre" wears a bonnet, a dress, has wings on her back and carries a harp. She sings about emotions and often likes to take requests.
  • Nikora the Canis Minor: "Nikora", named "Plue" by Lucy, resembles the same Plue from Hiro Mashima's previous work, Rave Master. He has no special abilities or powers, and serves more as a pet for Lucy...

Gray Fullbuster

Gray Fullbuster (グレイ・フルバスター Gurei Furubasutā?) is a main character of the series. He frequently teams up with Lucy and Natsu when they go on a mission. Natsu and Gray have a very brotherly, albeit competitive, relationship, with Natsu picking a fight with Gray whenever he says something that might be seen as insulting. Lucy theorizes that their constant fights are a natural by product of the magic styles. He is voiced by Yuichi Nakamura in Japanese and Newton Pittman in English.

Gray was taught how to use ice magic by Ul when he was a child after his parents were killed by Deliora. When Gray later attacked Deliora to seek revenge, Ul sacrifices herself to trap Deliora in ice and save Gray. During his training with Ul, Gray was forced to live in a snowy region wearing nothing but his underwear in order to get accustomed to the coldness of ice. Because of this he has developed the subconscious habit of removing his clothes at inappropriate times, as he is most comfortable without them. Gray is one of Fairy Tail's most talented wizards, and he is able to form static formations of ice with relative ease. Unlike his fellow student under Ul, Lyon, Gray uses both of his hands when forming ice since using only one hand can create unbalanced ice forms. After defeating Juvia, she falls in love with him and joins Fairy Tail to be with him, where they develop a friendship. Gray cares deeply about Erza he believes she is in the guild so she won't cry anymore.

Erza Scarlet

Erza Scarlet (エルザ・スカーレット Eruza Sukāretto?) is a main character of the series and one of Fairy Tail's S-class wizards. She is a very strong individual, is very stern, and places great value on the rules of Fairy Tail; if someone steps out of line or is slow to do as she asks, she does not hesitate to punish them, so many characters are quick to apologize if they think that they have angered her. This comes up most often when Natsu and Gray start arguing, where they are quick to stop and make up if someone mentions Erza. Erza is not without compassion, however, and will do her best to make Natsu and Gray happy, even if it means delaying their punishment until later. She is voiced by Sayaka Ohara in Japanese and Colleen Clinkenbeard in English.

As a child, Erza was one of the many slaves that constructed the Tower of Heaven. She was beaten frequently while there and eventually lost her right eye. During this she met a boy named Jellal who she fell in love with. She was eventually able to escape during a slave rebellion but was forced to leave her friends behind. Erza eventually arrived at Fairy Tail, and is given a false eye from Porlyusica. Her desire for armor resulted in her "re-quip" style of magic; with it she can instantly equip herself with armor or weapons in her vast arsenal. She is a talented warrior, being of comparable ability to guild leaders like Makarov. Her legendary status leads to her title of "Titania Erza", meaning "Queen of the Fairies". Her name was adapted from Eru, a character from a one-shot short story by Mashima that served as the basis for Fairy Tail.

Wendy Marvell

Wendy Marvell (ウェンディ・マーベル Wendi Māburu?) is a young girl, formerly from the Cait Shelter guild, who joins Fairy Tail after the Oracion Seis are defeated. She travels with a female talking white cat, Charle. Wendy utilizes Sky Dragon Slayer magic, which is the lost magic of healing. Her healing magic takes a large amount of energy, though she can replenish herself by eating air. She wishes to find her dragon, Grandine, who vanished at the same time as the other dragons, and wanted to meet Natsu, hoping he'd know about her. When Grandine left her, she was alone until Mystogan, who was actually Jellal's Edoras counterpart, found her and saved her life, but left her to the ghost of an old man who created Nirvana. The Old Man told her that she was in a guild after creating the illusion of "Cait Shelter" which was not an actual guild. After joining Fairy Tail, Wendy forms a strong bond with Natsu and Gajeel, due to their shared abilities. She is voiced by Satomi Satō.

Charle

Charle (シャルル Sharuru?) is a white Exceed who travels with Wendy, and the princess of Extalia, though unknown to her. Like Happy, she uses "Aera" magic, and also develops the ability of precognition. Originally stuck-up and rude, especially to Happy, she eventually begins to open up and develops a friendship with him. Voiced by Yui Horie.

Fairy Tail

Fairy Tail is a guild of wizards that typically regard each other as family, though they are very violent towards one another. It is regarded as one of the strongest guilds, but due to the constant collateral damage during their missions, they do not have a very good reputation. It has been said that everyone in Fairy Tail carries the wounds of a sad past.[10] The strongest members of the guild are called S-class, which currently consist of Gildarts, a man said to be only second to Makarov,[11] Erza, and Mirajane. Before they left the guild, Laxus and Mystogan were also recognized as S-class mages of Fairy Tail.

  • Makarov (マカロフ Makarofu?) is the aging master of Fairy Tail, who wishes to retire, although he believes none of the others are experienced enough. Hiro Mashima wanted his name to sound Russian[12] Makarov has a very laid back approach to leading Fairy Tail, and encourages its members to do what they think is right. He does not necessarily mind that Fairy Tail is renowned for its property damage, only issuing negligible punishments when it happens, but hates having to explain their actions to the Magic Council. Makarov, being a Wizard Saint, is one of the strongest wizards on the continent and can use a number of different magic forms and defeat most opponents with relative ease. His most common choice of magic causes him to turn into a giant, but when properly motivated to fight, he utilizes light magic, such as "Fairy Law", a spell with a large radius that can discern between friend and foe. He is voiced by Shinpachi Tsuji in Japanese and R Bruce Elliott in English..
  • Mirajane (ミラジェーン Mirajēn?), nicknamed "Mira", is a motherly waitress and cover girl of the guild, and Elfman (エルフマン Erufuman?), a large man obsessed with spouting speeches about "manhood", are two siblings who specialize in the "Take Over" style of magic, which allows for the user to transform into any monster that they have defeated. Mirajane's name comes from a video game Hiro Mashima was playing while he created her.[13] After Lisanna, their younger sister, was thought to have sacrificed herself to return Elfman from an unsuccessful transformation, but in reality was sucked into an anima headed to Fairy Tail in Edoras. Mirajane, originally an S-class mage, lost her will to use most magic, and Elfman became unable to transform anything more than his arms. Elfman eventually becomes able to fully transform in order to save his older sister, and Mirajane is able to unlock her abilities after seeing Fried mercilessly attack Elfman. Mirajane is initially only able to use basic transformation magic, but after regaining her abilities, she is able to use water magic and a demonic Take Over form. Mirajane is voiced by Ryoko Ono (Japanese), Monica Rial (English) and Elfman is voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto (Japanese), Christopher Sabat (English).
  • Loke (ロキ Roki?) is very flirtatious with any and all attractive women, though he was very wary of Lucy because of her status as a Celestial Spirit wizard. He avoided her at all costs, but eventually confided in her that he was actually Leo of the Lion Palace, a traitorous Celestial Spirit banished to the human world for inadvertently killing his previous master, Karen Lilica, by forcibly drawing out his contract to make sure that she did not abuse any more spirits. He was slowly dying due to spirits being unable to stay in the human world for long, and when he became ready to accept his fate, Lucy convinced him and the Spirit King that he did the right thing. He formed a contract with her to thank her, and became able to forcibly summon himself to protect her. He is voiced by Daisuke Kishio.
  • Cana Alberona (カナ・アルベローナ Kana Aruberōna?) is a short tempered woman, who constantly drinks alcohol and utilizes card based magic. She has been with the guild since childhood, and she acts as a leader during times of emergency. She is actually Gildarts' daughter. She is voiced by Eri Kitamura. Her name was derived from Arcana, a classification for occult tarot cards which she also uses as part of her magic.[8]
  • Laxus Dreyar (ラクサス・ドレアー Rakusasu Doreā?) is Makarov's grandson, who believed that his grandfather needed to retire and pass the title of master to himself. He wears a pair of spiked headphones, often smokes cigars, and he has a lightning-shaped scar that runs down the right side of his face. Though he was kind and loving towards the guild during his childhood, the excommunication of his father and constantly being in the shadow of his grandfather caused him to begin strive to be the strongest and hate the "weak" members of the guild. Laxus utilizes Lightning Dragon Slayer magic by using Lacrima crystals placed within his naturally weak body, but now his father's intentions are to remove and sell them, killing him in the process.[14] After his coup with Fairy Tail, he is removed from the guild, though he leaves on good terms with Makarov. He is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi.
  • The Raijin Tribe act as the bodyguards of Laxus. All of them were previously indifferent to the other members of Fairy Tail and each has a magical ability hidden within their eyes. Along with Laxus, they started Fairy Tail's interguild war, and acted as villains during that duration. After Laxus is removed from the guild, they gradually begin to interact with other members of Fairy Tail.

Fried Justine rarely visits the guild, and he utilizes various enchantments that force people to follow specific, and often unknown, rules within a specific area, or they suffer whichever consequences he decides. He also is able to use a sword to create sensations or realities by writing on his opponent and himself, such as causing "pain" or "fear", or growing "wings." Evergreen is a girl who joined the guild specifically because she dreamed of being a fairy as a child. She can turn opponents to stone with a glare, and can use exploding dust and needles. Bixlow is a strange man in a suit of armor who is capable of controlling five dolls implanting them with souls. He can take over other people's souls by having them look into his eyes. The Raijin Tribe are voiced by Junichi Suwabe (Fried), Saori Seto (Evergreen), and Yoshihisa Kawahara (Bixlow).

  • Mystogan (ミストガン Misutogan?) is extremely reclusive, fully cloaking every part of his body, and using sleeping spells while visiting the guild. He helps the guild from the background in most occasions, though he directly faces Laxus during his coup. He is Jellal's Edoras counterpart. After stopping the King of Edoras from stealing Earth Land's magic, and erasing what's left of the depleting magic, Mystogan stays behind to govern Edoras. He is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa.
  • Gildarts Clive is an extremely powerful wizard, often called the strongest in Fairy Tail. When he returns to Magnolia Town, the entire city divides itself, due to Gildarts' magic that destroys anything he touches. He is also known for taking incredibly long and dangerous missions, one of which cost him his left arm, left leg, and an organ, due to being defeated by a black dragon. He is good friends with Natsu. For most of the series he was simply referred to as "that old guy" by the other members of Fairy Tail. He is the father of Cana Alberona.
  • Gajeel Redfox (ガジル・レッドフォックス Gajiru Reddofokkusu?), nicknamed "Kurogane Gajeel", was originally the second strongest member of Phantom Lord, though he joins Fairy Tail after it is dispersed. He is initially not trusted by many of Fairy Tail's other wizards, having attacked the guild hall and several members during the conflict with his previous guild, but Gajeel eventually gains their trust. During this period, it's found that he was a double agent, giving Makarov information about his son, Ivan Dreyar, Laxus' father. He uses a variant of the Dragon Slayer style based on metal/steel; he can turn his body into iron, shoot large steel rods, and gains strength by eating metal. He forms a rivalry with Natsu, having been defeated by him, and he is also looking for Metalicana, the dragon who taught him his magic. After noticing that his fellow dragon slayers Natsu and Wendy both had cat companions, Gajeel became determined to find one for himself. Eventually, he gets his own Exceed named Panther Lily. Voiced by Wataru Hatano.
  • Juvia Loxar (ジュビア・ロクサー Jubia Rokusā?) was initially one of the Element Four of Phantom Lord, but she develops feelings for Gray after he defeats her, which leads her to join Fairy Tail. She is able to control water and make it rain. Her body is made out of water, allowing her to easily reform from physical attacks. She becomes close with Lucy, whom Juvia incorrectly believes to be a rival for Gray's affection. Her name is derived from "Lluvia", the Spanish word for rain. Voiced by Mai Nakahara.
  • Shadow Gear is a team made up of Levy McGarden, Jet, and Droy, who befriend Lucy after she joins the guild. Levy is able to solidify written words and have opponents experience the corresponding effect, such as throwing the word "fire" to cause a burning sensation. Jet can move at extremely high speeds, and Droy can manipulate rapid-growing plants. Both Jet and Droy have crushes on Levy, though she instantly rejects both of them. They are voiced by Mariya Ise (Levy), Eiji Sekiguchi (Droy), and Masaki Kawanabe (Jet).
  • Lisanna is the younger sister of both Elfman and Mirajane. It was originally believed that she had died on a mission with her siblings, but in actuality, was brought to Edoras through Anima, a portal that can suck magic from one world to another. She together with Natsu brought up Happy's egg together and they were very close friends. After she "died", whenever anyone brings up or makes Natsu remember her will cause him to get very angry. When Mystogan brings all of Edoras' magic to Earth Land, she is brought back to her own world, along with every other being with internal magic, and is reinstated back into Fairy Tail. Voiced by Harumi Sakurai.
  • Panther Lily is a black Exceed who formerly worked under the King of Edolas as a tactician. Originally from Extalia, the home of the Exceed race, Panther Lily was banished after rescuing a human, Edoras Jellal. After he, along with all of the other Exceed from Edoras, are brought to Earth Land via Anima, is adopted by Gajeel. He joins Fairy Tail to carry on Jellal's efforts in the guild, demonstrating a polite respectful attitude towards its members, particularly Erza. Originally having a more humanoid appearance, his body structure to that of similar to Happy and Charle, though he is able to switch back to his original form for a short time.

Minor Fairy Tail Members

Fairy Tail also includes a large number of minor guild members, who usually appear in the background or in a minor capacity during events in the story. Macao Conbolt is one of the older mages of Fairy Tail who uses a magic called Purple Flare, which produces a fire that can't be put out by wind or water. Wakaba Mine a man with a pompadour who uses smoke-based magic from his pipe and a friend and rival of Macao. Reedus Jonah is a rotund man who can draw on himself and then make his drawings come to life. Nab Lasaro resembles a Native-American and can confine an animal's fighting spirit within himself to aid him in battle. Alzack Connell and Bisca Mulan are two foreigners who wear old-Western movie type clothes and use gun-related magic. They are secretly in love with each other, but are too shy to confess. Warren Rocko is a man who can use telepathy in battle. Max Alors is a young mage who can control sand in battle. Vijeeter Ecor is a young mage who can use dance-related magic to aid his allies' or inhibit his enemies' fighting potential.
